Cycling Safety Activist Injured In Encinitas Collision

A prominent bicyclist safety activist was rushed to the hospital on December 8, 2018, after a near-fatal crash.

Roberta Walker, a leader at the Cardiff 101 Main Street Association, is now recovering from her injuries in a local hospital.

According to the Del Mar Times, this crash happened just before 6:15AM on North Coast Highway 101 close to the Leucadia Post Office. Both Walker and the truck driver involved in this crash were headed south before the collision. Allegedly, the motorist hit Walker from behind and caused her to fall off of her bicycle.

When safety crews arrived on the scene, they found Walker lying on the pavement with severe injuries to her spine, ribs, and skull. They quickly transported her to an area hospital.

Police are still investigating the cause of this crash. Anyone with information could call the Encinitas Police Department at (760) 633-2600.

Ironically, Walker has been a prominent supporter of the Leucadia Streetscape Plan, which would create a bike-protected lane on Coast Highway. In the wake of this crash, lawmakers in Encinitas have pledged to take a closer look at this project.
