While police on the scene initially said that they were looking for a grey or dark-colored SUV that appeared to stop briefly at the scene before continuing without rendering aid, police are not sure if there ever was a vehicle. Instead, they believe that the bicyclists may have hit the curb and went down causing the fateful accident on Strathern Street near Belligham Avenue.
The name of the 45-year-old rider has not been released. The rider appears to have been riding in the bike lane was transported to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Police are asking anyone who might have more details about the deadly accident to contact them.
Unfortunately, this accident reminds riders that while biking is good exercise and a healthy way to commute, they should always take precautions. Start with dressing properly in light-colored clothes at night. Never leave on your bike without wearing a helmet. Always make sure that you have lights and reflectors on your bike so that it can clearly be seen. Remember that while you try to be safe by riding in the bike lanes where they are available, you also need to always be aware of your surroundings.
