La Jolla Cycling Accident Kills Local Scientist June 2021

Swati Tyagi, a scientist with the Salk Institute, was killed in a cycling accident on Wednesday, June 23, 2021.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported on the incident. Tyagi, 34, was “riding south on North Torry Pines Road approaching La Jolla Village Drive when she was struck from behind around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday.”

Tyagi was struck by a 74-year-old man driving a 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL500. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tyagi has been working with the Salk Institute since 2016. Vice president and chief science officer Martin Hetzer spoke about Tyagi’s death, saying, “The shock and pain from Swati’s sudden passing is raw and deep. We are struggling to process this heartbreaking news… Swati was a rising star with immense intelligence, noble modesty and boundless generosity.”

Tyagi is survived by her husband, Ashim Rai, and an 11-month-old son, Miransh.
