Cupertino Cyclist Hit by Car and Killed in San Benito County

40-year-old Michael Cleveland of San Lordnzo, California, is believed to have struck Jonathan Kaplan while he was riding a Trek bike north on Highway 25 near Cienega Road in San Benito County, California.

According to Mercury News, Cleveland was driving a 2001 Toyota when he struck the bicyclist at approximately 12:50 PM on February 20, 2018, on the stretch of highway that is also identified as Airline Highway. Authorities pronounced Kaplan dead at the scene. They believe that Kaplan died instantly after he was thrown from his bike hitting the asphalt roadway.

Officers with the California Highway Patrol said it will take them four to six weeks to release their report, but it is not believed that drugs or alcohol were involved in the death of the 65-year-old bicyclist. It is believed that speed may have played a part in the accident.
